FAQ
HOW FAR IN ADVANCE SHOULD I BOOK?
For regular stays, a week or two is usually sufficient. For holidays, spring
break, and summer weekends, book 4-6 weeks ahead. Many Louisville-area kennels
require deposits for peak periods.
WHAT VACCINATIONS DOES MY DOG NEED TO BOARD?
Most facilities require rabies, distemper/parvo, and bordetella (kennel cough).
Some also require canine influenza. Your vet can provide documentation — bring
it to check-in.
WHAT SHOULD I PACK FOR MY DOG'S STAY?
Bring their regular food (pre-portioned by day), any medications, vaccination
records, and a comfort item like a blanket or toy. Leave valuables and personal
bedding at home unless the facility specifically allows it.
CAN MY DOG TAKE THEIR MEDICATIONS WHILE BOARDING?
Yes, most kennels will administer oral and topical medications. Some charge a
small additional fee. Injectable medications are generally not administered at
boarding facilities — check with your kennel in advance.
WHAT IF MY DOG HAS NEVER BEEN BOARDED BEFORE?
Ask the facility about a trial daycare day first. This lets your dog get familiar
with the environment before an overnight stay and helps staff get to know your pet.
ARE ALL KENNELS CAGE-FREE?
No. Some facilities are fully cage-free, others use kennels or runs, and some
offer both options. If this matters to you, confirm before booking.
WHAT HAPPENS IF MY DOG GETS SICK OR INJURED WHILE BOARDING?
Reputable kennels will contact you immediately and seek veterinary care if needed.
Facilities attached to veterinary clinics, like Hillside Animal Clinic, have an
added advantage here. Always leave emergency contact information and your vet's
number.
CAN I BRING MY DOG'S OWN FOOD?
Yes, and it's strongly recommended. Switching foods suddenly can cause digestive
upset, especially combined with the stress of a new environment. Most kennels
will follow your feeding schedule.
WHAT IF MY DOG DOESN'T GET ALONG WITH OTHER DOGS?
Let the kennel know ahead of time. Most facilities assess temperament before
allowing group play and can arrange solo playtime or private runs for dogs that
prefer their own space.
IS IT NORMAL FOR MY DOG TO SEEM "OFF" AFTER BOARDING?
Yes. Some dogs sleep more, eat less, or seem subdued for a day or two after
returning home. This is usually just the dog decompressing. If symptoms persist
beyond 48 hours or you notice signs of illness, contact your vet.
WHAT IS A BORDETELLA VACCINE AND WHY IS IT REQUIRED?
Bordetella protects against kennel cough, a highly contagious respiratory
infection that spreads easily in group settings. It's one of the most common
boarding requirements and should be given at least a week before the stay.
DO KENNELS ACCEPT PUPPIES?
Many do, but puppies must typically have completed their initial vaccine series
first. Some facilities offer puppy-specific programs with extra socialization
and more frequent feeding.
CAN I CALL OR CHECK ON MY DOG DURING THEIR STAY?
Absolutely — any reputable facility will welcome your call. Many now also offer
webcam access or send daily photos and updates.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BOARDING AND DAYCARE?
Daycare is drop-off care during the day with pickup before closing. Boarding
includes overnight stays. Many facilities offer both, and some include daycare
activities as part of the boarding rate.
